Vasectomy provides safe and effective birth control

Vasectomy is one of the safest and most effective forms of permanent birth control. As such, men usually choose to have a vasectomy when they have either completed their families or have decided not to have children. With today’s modern instruments and local anesthesia, vasectomy is a brief and almost painless procedure that does not require a hospital stay.

No-needle anaesthesia

The no-needle approach utilises a high pressure spray device to deliver a micro-mist of anaesthesia through and around the skin. Patients feel at most a brief discomfort from the first spray injection. The sensation is a bit like being snapped by a small rubber band. This no-needle technique has been used in the USA since 2005 and has rapidly become the gold standard in delivering the local anaesthetic required for vasectomies.

No-scalpel technique

Introduced in the USA in 1985, the no-scalpel vasectomy differs from conventional vasectomy in its surgical approach. It does not require the use of a scalpel or knife. Instead, a specially designed instrument is used to make a tiny opening in the skin. No stitches are needed to close the opening, which heals quickly. In addition, this method produces virtually no scarring or postoperative complications.

The vasectomy procedure

1. A tiny hole is made in the scrotal skin using a pair of fine forceps. This puncture-type wound heals promptly without stitches.
2. A ring clamp is used to grasp the vas without traumatizing the surrounding tissues. There are multiple delicate layers of blood vessels around the vas deferens, which are separated away before the vas is cut.
3. Both ends of the vas are sealed with a heated cautery, which minimizes post procedure pain.
4. Titanium clips are placed on both ends of each cut vas deferens.

The testicles continue to produce sperm for the rest of your life. After a vasectomy, however, the sperm are broken down and reabsorbed by the body rather than forming part of the ejaculate.
